tornadoes. this is what it looked like in communities from indiana to georgia. winds as strong as 200 miles per hour ripped through towns. at least 37 people are dead. as many as 17 million people were impacted by the storms. scores of injured people waking up in hospitals this morning. their homes and the homes of their neighbors gone. people now picking through the rubble to find anything they can salvage. president obama is offering federal assistance in the areas battered by the storms. in the little town of west liberty, kentucky, the town felt the full force of a tornado's 1 135-mile-per-hour winds. it leveled building, uprooted trees. cnn evers rob marciano is there getting the first look at some of the town's most extensive damage. rob, good morning to you. >> good morning, gary. they've finally got the roads cleared enough to where larger vehicles can get in here including obviously rescue and recovery vehicles and our satellite truck so we're getting now a first look at -- a live look at the main street. over my left shoulder you're seeing some demolished buildings. the corn

, heads up our reporting from henryville, indiana. hey, lester, good evening. >> reporter: brian, good evening. i'm standing in the middle of the 52-mile-long path of the biggest tornado of that day, the ef4 churning at speeds of 175 miles per hour. what does that translate into? how about a power pole that snapped into thirds? reinforced metal bent like paper around that tree branch. and here's the attic of a house that simply collapsed on top of itself. this didn't take place over a matter of minutes. it happened in a matter of seconds. and survivors are finding that moving on presents a new and different challenge each day. three days after the tornado gutted this small indiana town, this morning, a blanket of snow, adding insult to injury. aaron zoman falls on the slick rubble of his home as he searches for family photos and keepsakes. he's unhurt. >> kind of makes you worry about the rest of the pictures that's left when all that snow melts. >> reporter: today, many of his neighbors who also lost their homes filed into a church to accept donated food, clothing and supplies.

, killing at least six people, according to the latest figures. the state of tennessee, kentucky and indiana have been battered by powerful storms and large hailstones. one small town in indiana is said to have completely gone. let's speak to chad hinton who joins us from indiana. chad, i want to ask you first of all about these pictures you have sent us of this big tornado. tell me where you were when you took it and where you going to? >> yes, i was heading home from work, and i was just driving home to take shelter because the advance notice of the severe weather coming in. i was about two miles away from the tornado which, in my photos and video, it is over the henry bell, marysville area that was devastated. >> why are you not trying to get away? clearly, i understand that you live there, but were people not moving away from the area? this is not the only tornado. >> right, there were a lot. basically, you're told to seek shelter in your basement. in between work and home i was trying to get to the nearest point and get into the basement of the home. of course, we did not know exactly w

up these scattered pieces of their lives. jay gray has our report from henryville, indiana. >> reporter: there is an eerie silence that hangs over the emptiness here. a quiet that comes with nightfall. after a day filled with the sounds of survival. the whine of chainsaws, the rumble of frontloaders and backthose and the steady rhythm of so many sifting through the rubble by hand. >> people from everywhere are coming to help. >> reporter: searching for anything that may be left from lives shattered by the storm. >> everybody does a little bit, it'll get much better faster. >> reporter: for more than three dozen families, though, it can't get better. their loved ones aren't ever coming back. a group that now includes little 15-month-old angel babcock. first responders found the toddler fighting for her life in this field. her mom, dad, and two brothers already dead. today angel passed away, after being pulled from life support. her grandfather shared his emotions just before he made the agonizing decision. >> my pastor's going to go in with me, and we're going to pray over -

communities trying to move forward in marysville, indiana. a single church left standing among the rubble there. just nine miles away in henryville, people found one of the few churches left standing and gathered desperately needed supplies for those who lost everything holding on to each other in the pews. tonight we're also watching the weather map again because across a huge part of this tornado zone winter weather warnings are now up. snow and cold moving in, and we begin tonight with ginger zee in indiana who flew over the devastation today. ginger, good evening to you. >> reporter: good evening to you, david. this winter weather is just a second punch for so many affected by these tornadoes, and today we flew above the tornadic annihilation, and the images will take your breath away. oh, it's hard to see this from up here. seeing it from the air, mile after mile, ravaged by tornadoes, a new level of heartbreak. we just saw a home completely off its foundation. the storm blasted across the region southwest to northeast. new video shows the power amassing in the twister as it targeted
